How to Prepare for a First Tutoring Session
The first session is for finding out where the student is. A little preparation makes it much more useful.
What to bring
- Current homework, the textbook or class notes, and any graded tests or quizzes.
- The syllabus or a list of upcoming tests, if the student has one.
- A calculator the student normally uses, and pencil and paper.
- For Virtual sessions: a charged device, a quiet spot, and Zoom ready to go.
What happens in the session
We begin with the Assess stage: a conversation about how the student thinks and what feels hard, then a few problems to see where understanding is solid and where it breaks down. Afterwards we sketch a plan for the next few weeks.
What helps most from a parent
- Share the goal in plain terms: a grade in a class, a test date, or confidence.
- Tell us if the student gets frustrated or anxious, so we can adjust the pace.
- For students under 18, be at the location or reachable by phone. See Student Safety.
What to expect afterward
You get a sense of the plan and what to practice before the next session. Parents receive regular progress updates after that.
