Questions to Ask a Math Tutor Before You Hire
A good tutor will welcome these questions. Here is what to ask and what to listen for.
- How do you find out where my child is? Look for a real starting assessment, not just starting with homework.
- What will the plan be? You should hear topics, order and goals, not “we’ll see.”
- How will I know it is working? Ask about regular updates and what they contain.
- Will it be the same tutor every time? Consistency matters for trust and continuity.
- Where do sessions happen, and where will I be? For students under 18, look for public spaces or a parent present or reachable.
- How does scheduling, cancelling and make-up work? The rules should be written, with notice times and costs clear.
- What happens if I want to stop? Ask how ending a plan early is priced, with an example.
- What does it cost, in total? Ask for the per-lesson price and what a month or semester includes.
- Do you guarantee results? Be cautious of promises of a specific grade or score.
- Can we try a conversation first? A free intro call is a fair way to find out if it is a fit.
